Lady Gaga tweeted about her Little Monsters. Kim Kardashian tweeted about Beyoncé's baby-bump secret. Those Twitter updates and millions more made the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards the most tweeted-about awards show ever.
In total, the VMA Pre-Show and main show drove 10 million tweets, according to newly released numbers for the social-networking site.
That awards-show record was just one that the VMAs shattered. Beyoncé set the record for the most mentions on Twitter per second with 8,868, helping make the show the most-watched broadcast in MTV history, pulling in 12.4 million viewers. Pre-show viewership also set a record, and MTV Digital saw its highest VMA day ever on Sunday with show content attracting 2 million unique visitors, an increase of 33 percent year over year.
Twitter helped make it all happen. As the black-carpet pre-show kicked off inside the JW Marriott in downtown Los Angeles, the trend #whatwillgagawear lit up the social-networking site and became one of the longest running of the night. During the show itself, over half of the worldwide Twitter Trends were connected to the VMAs — and at times they took over eight or nine of the top 10 trends. The trends also included shout-outs to Justin Bieber and Joe Jonas, and the two simple statements, #DemiYouAreBeautiful and BEYONCE IS PREGNANT.
All that attention had an added benefit for the pregnant pop star: Her song "Love on Top" leapt into the iTunes top five after she performed it onstage at the Nokia and revealed her baby bump to the world.

'The video is a fantasy story,' statement says after U.K. criticism that the clip glorifies violence.

When Britney Spears flew to London earlier this month to shoot her video for "Criminal," she probably didn't think the clip would generate the kind of controversy it has.
And yet, in the week since she wrapped filming, Spears has been taken to task by politicians in the U.K. for a scene in the video, in which the pop star packs a pistol as she flees a London-area building. They've claimed that the image of Brit gripping a gun glamorizes violence and, in the aftermath of the widespread riots that rattled the nation last month, the pop star should "apologize ... for the rudeness and damage that she's done to our community."
Late Monday (September 26), MTV News received a statement from Spears' camp about the "Criminal" controversy — and, from the sound of things, she's not going to be apologizing anytime soon.
"The video is a fantasy story featuring Britney's boyfriend, Jason Trawick, which literally plays out the lyrics of a song written three years before the riots ever happened," the statement read.
Criticisms of the "Criminal" video began last week, after images of Spears and Trawick making an escape from an apparent robbery (with Brit brandishing a replica revolver) began making the rounds. The scene in question was shot in the London borough of Hackney, which was hit hard by the August riots, and local politicians were upset by what they saw as an insensitive gesture by Spears.
"It is only a music video, but it's images like this, with pop stars glamorizing gangs, which means that some young people ... get drawn in," Hackney's Member of Parliament, Diane Abbott, told the ITV news program "London Tonight." "Britney should really know better."
Hackney's council members — who gave Spears' camp the OK to shoot at the nearby Stoke Newington Town Hall — also took issue with the fact that no one involved with the production of the "Criminal" video mentioned that a gun was to be used in the clip and, had they known, they would not have allowed filming in the recently restored building.
"In this case we did not agree that a replica gun could be used at Stoke Newington Town Hall and are disappointed," the council said in a statement to "London Tonight." "We will be raising this matter with the production company."

Gaga leads Europe Music Awards nominees with six nods, including Best Video and Biggest Fans at November 6 show.

Lady Gaga is ruling the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards nominees list.
Mother Monster, who nabbed six EMA nominations, is followed by Katy Perry and Bruno Mars with four noms; Adele, Justin Bieber and Thirty Seconds to Mars are each up for three.
Gaga is up for Best Female, Best Live Act, Best Pop Act, Best Song and Best Video for "Born This Way." She scored the sixth nom in the Biggest Fans category, an honor she'll share with her Little Monsters if she wins.
American and Canadian audiences can vote for the North American nominee for the Worldwide Act award, who will represent the continent at the EMAs against contenders from across the globe.
So, who will go head-to-head with the superstar? Adele's unstoppable "Rolling in the Deep," Bruno Mars' "Grenade," Jennifer Lopez's "On the Floor" (featuring Pitbull) and Katy Perry's "Firework" will go up against Gaga for Best Song.
For Best Pop, Britney Spears, Bieber, Perry, Rihanna and Gaga are set to face off, while Adele, Beyoncé, J.Lo, Katy and Gaga also made the final cut for Best Female.
Battling it out in the Best Male category are Bruno Mars, David Guetta, Bieber, Kanye West and Eminem, who's also up for Best Hip Hop alongside Lil Wayne, Jay-Z and Kanye West (a.k.a. the Throne), Pitbull and Snoop Dogg.
Coldplay, the Foo Fighters, Linkin Park, Kings of Leon and Red Hot Chili Peppers are up for Best Rock. And the night's big prize, Best Video, features the most eclectic mix of nominees: Adele's "Rolling in the Deep," the Beastie Boys' "Make Some Noise," Beyoncé's "Run the World (Girls)," Justice's "Civilization" and Gaga's "Born This Way."
On Monday morning (September 19), Bieber reacted to the nods on Twitter, writing, "Just got word that we got 3 MTV EMA Nominations for Best Male, Best Pop, Biggest Fans!! THANKS SO MUCH! LEt's VOTE!!!"
Well, those fans better take note. Beliebers voting in the Biggest Fans category will face off against his girlfriend Selena Gomez's followers, Thirty Second to Mars' devotees, Paramore's biggest admirers and, of course, Lady Gaga's Monsters.

Long-distance love isn't always easy to keep alive — just ask Snooki.
While filming the fourth season of "Jersey Shore," the pint-size guidette introduced us to her long-term boyfriend, Jionni. Every week, viewers have listened in on their countless phone conversations, and after much anticipation, Jionni came for a drama-filled visit to Italy on Thursday night's episode.
"It sucked from being with him six months every single day to not being with him, being in another freakin' country and, like, not talking to him. It was really hard," Snooki told MTV News of her overseas love. "It was legit like a long-distance relationship."
Yet, someone who didn't have trouble keeping her relationship strong was JWoww, whose boyfriend Roger (whom we frequently saw in Seaside during season three) just wanted her to have a good time in Florence.
"It was actually the easiest I ever thought it was going to be," JWoww said. "My ex made me feel like I never wanted to go film, so I was kind of dreading that, and Roger was like, 'Dude, I want you to have a blast, go have fun, this is your 20s, you need to go do this. I'm not going to keep you from doing this. I want you to.' Because he traveled Europe in his 20s, so getting over there, it was so easy."
The long-distance relationship with Roger may have been easy for JWoww, but the hard part was not being able to see her dogs. "The only thing I really missed, besides him, were my dogs," JWoww said. "Because I can't be like, 'Hey, what's going,' on the phone with my dogs, but it was a lot easier than I expected."

What do Britney Spears and Usher have in common? Well, they are both global superstars with a back catalogue of tunes that have kept fans dancing for a really long time and they both recently hooked up with will.i.am for tracks on their latest releases (the Black Eyed Peas mastermind worked on the pop vixen's Femme Fatale tune "Big Fat Bass"). And, if Spears has her way, she and the "OMG" singer could be hitting the road together.
When Spears sat down to talk with Sway Calloway for her "Britney Spears: I Am the Femme Fatale" special — airing Sunday (April 3) at 9 p.m. ET on MTV — the singer revealed that Usher is first on her list of artists she'd like to join her on tour.
"Oh, I'm so excited. I'm really excited about going on tour, very," she explained about her forthcoming summer trek, which happens to have a spot open on the bill now that Enrique Iglesias has pulled out of the gig. "I think Usher's really great right now. I think he's really hot right now. That would be cool [to tour with him]."
The North American road trip is expected to kick off June 17 in Sacramento, California, and will run for 26 dates, winding up on August 13 in Toronto. More details will be announced soon.
The "Britney Spears: I Am the Femme Fatale" special is a mixture of behind-the-scenes footage of the singer as she wraps up production on her album, which dropped this week, as well as an inside look at her life and fans. In addition, those who couldn't make Spears' recent nightclub show in Las Vegas will get to see her as she takes the stage in her latest pop incarnation.

Although we can generally expect the unexpected during awards shows, it's safe to say that it was especially surprising to see the cast of "Jersey Shore" make an appearance at the 63rd annual Emmy Awards on Sunday night (September 18).
Our favorite Seaside Heights crew popped up in a mock "state of TV news" story by Anderson Cooper. He introduced the segment, a spotlight on "prominent TV executive" Donatella Alberghetti Mangiana D'Borgia (Jane Lynch), as if it were a part of his show "Anderson Cooper 360," and we learned the real story about how "Jersey Shore" came to be.
"Thanks to me, now 50 percent of all television is set in Jersey," Lynch as D'Borgia said, complete with a thick Jersey accent, with Cooper adding in voice-over that D'Borgia is responsible for 114 different shows, one of them being "Jersey Shore," for which she plucked "eight at-risk youths from obscurity and made them stars."
"I was already a DJ when I met her," Pauly said. "At NPR."
"I found Vinny living in a walk-in freezer in a pizzeria," D'Borgia revealed.
"Now we get paid to drink!" Vinny chimed in with a smile.
"Before I met Donatella, I was just Nicole, a Harvard undergrad," Snooki revealed. "And now, I'm Snooki."
"She's threatened to kill us numerous times," Mike "The Situation" added over shots of Lynch's character threatening the castmembers with violence.
"She's like a mother to me," Pauly said. "Because she killed my mother."
The segment ended with footage of the crew play-fighting and D'Borgia expressing her undying love for her moneymakers.
"Why do I do what I do?" Lynch as D'Borgia said to camera. "Because watching these kids is like Cirque Du Soleil. Freakin' beautiful, just like Jersey."
Cooper finished off the piece with a stoic sign-off, calling D'Borgia and the "Jersey Shore" kiddos a "sobering look at the future of television."

Raven made her tv comeback this summer with her "State of Georgia" 30-minute sitcom, centered around an aspiring actress who leaves the South to become a big star. But ABC Family just cancelled it saying the show failed to attract viewers.
The network ran 4 of her new episodes back to back several weeks ago seeming to push out the last of the shows as quickly as they could.

In our Fall Movie Preview, Drake Doremus says he 'was shocked' over chemistry between Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones.

For his romantic weeper "Like Crazy" — the 2011 Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize winner about two college sweethearts torn apart due to deportation — director Drake Doremus tapped a veritable who's who of Hollywood's young, up-and-coming talent, including Anton Yelchin and Jennifer Lawrence. But he took a real gamble on 27-year-old Felicity Jones, casting the actress after having only seen an audition tape filmed in her London flat. He said it was a risk well worth the return.
As part of our Fall Movie Preview, Doremus spoke with MTV News about the autobiographical nature of his tender drama, taking a chance on Jones and all those comparisons to "Blue Valentine."

MTV: This is such a heart-wrenching love story. Is it autobiographical in any way? What was your inspiration?
Drake Doremus: I think, trying to make a genuine love story, it would be silly not to try to dig deep and find pieces of yourself and put them in the film. So there's a lot of emotional truth in the film that I've gone through and relationship elements, for sure. It's a very personal love story.
MTV: Felicity Jones is already gaining a lot of buzz for her performance. It seems like she kind of came out of nowhere. How did you cast her?
Doremus: Felicity sent me a tape from London. I had seen about 50 girls in Los Angeles. I'd brought a few of them in with Anton and did the chemistry read, and I was not quite feeling it yet. She sent a tape of herself in her flat in London. She just embodied everything that was this character. I immediately called her and told her to come. It was a total gut call. I had never even seen her with Anton, and I didn't even know if they'd have chemistry, but something in my gut told me we had to cast Felicity Jones and that she was the right person for this. And man, oh man, that's probably one of the best decisions I've ever made in my career.
MTV: Were you surprised by the actors' intense chemistry given that they hadn't tested together?
Doremus: Yeah, I was shocked. I mean, it's a tribute to how game they were to go down this path and go down this journey. At the first rehearsal session, I asked them very specifically, "You have to understand what kind of a journey we're going on here. We're going to live this thing. We're going to breathe it, and it's going to come from the inside out. You're going to have a four-week love affair. Are you guys game to do this?" They were 100 percent game.
MTV: You improvised a lot of scenes in this film. Is that a process that was specific to this project, or a method you prefer?
Doremus: It's a formula I've been developing for the last couple of years that I'm continuing to fine-tune and use. It's essentially just a form of writing the characters, the backstory and the emotional arc and where we're going. The actors are always encouraged to do and say whatever they feel and let things happen sort of organically.
MTV: Does this approach leave you with a lot more footage to work with than if you'd strictly stuck to a script?
Doremus: Absolutely. It's crazy, actually. We could have cut four, five completely different versions of this movie. It would have been the same story but how we got to the end point would have been very different. You give yourself options, and the editing process becomes the third leg of the writing stool.
MTV: Many critics have been calling "Like Crazy" this year's "Blue Valentine." What do you make of those comparisons?
Doremus: Well, first of all, it's an honor. I think that's a very beautiful film. But I think they're very different. You know, I think this film is a much more romantic, innocent and hopeful and optimistic look at love.

And about the mysteriousness still surrounding Gregg and NeNe's "relationship," the fan is calling it out as pure fakery. Shocker.
We're told, "Both NeNe & Gregg were looking very much like a "family" to me. Maybe that's why she was so rude, because somebody had actually recognized her and blew her cover for the rude ghetto snake she actually is."
We shall see on the new season. We knew Gregg ass wasn't going NO-WHERE....

Earlier this week, we tried our hand at picking the winners for the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, but with the big show just around the corner -- airing live from Los Angeles this Sunday at 9 p.m. — we figured it was time to let the pros have their say.
We reached out to the folks at the Bodog Sportsbook to get their take on Sunday's show ... and, as it turns out, much like us, they see it being a big night for Katy Perry. But it definitely won't be a clean sweep for the California Gurl; they also like Justin Bieber's and Lady Gaga's chances too.

Just hours after the televised confirmation of her pregnancy, French First Lady, Carla Bruni was spotted out in Paris, France earlier today (September 5).
Showing off her burgeoning baby bump in a belly-hugging gray sweatshirt, the 43-year-old mother-to-be was all smiles as she made her way through the bevy of impending shutterbugs.
During an interview with TF1 program "Sept A Huit," which aired last night, Carla not only confirmed news that she and husband Nicolas Sarkozy are expecting, but she also described her staunch stance against putting her baby in the public eye.
"You don't have a child for the [photo] gallery," she told, adding that her "position as the wife of the head of state has made me even more defensive. I understand the media interest, and I don't see any inconvenience in it for myself or my husband, but when it concerns the children, it's not impossible."
Bruni, who has already dealt with the media's prying eyes with her first child, 11-year-old Aurelian, added, "I will do everything to protect this infant, and I'll be absolutely rigorous. I will never show photos of this child. I will never expose this child."
